SMALL BALL, BIG DRAMA: PADRES BUNT THEIR WAY TO WILD COMEBACK WIN OVER REDS
SAN DIEGO — Welcome to Petco Park, baseball fans, where the San Diego Padres just proved that sometimes the prettiest way to win is playing ugly! Slouching through an anemic offensive funk with just two wins in their last 13 tries, the Friars dug deep into the old-school playbook Monday night. They didn't bash their way out of the slump; they bunted, squeezed, and completely manufactured a chaotic, four-run 7th inning rally to clip the Cincinnati Reds, 6-2.
The party started early in the bottom of the third when the hottest catcher in the game, Freddy Fermin, absolutely crushed an Abbott fastball for a line-drive solo shot. That is home run number three in three consecutive games for the backstop! But the Reds fired back, scratching across runs to take a 2-1 lead into the fateful 7th. That is when shortstop Xander Bogaerts sparked the engine, hammering a leadoff double before Gavin Sheets stepped up and ripped a clutch, inside-out double down the left-field line to tie the ballgame at two pieces.
Exit Abbott, enter Cincinnati reliever Tejay Antone, and cue the absolute bedlam. The Padres looked at the defense and said, "We're laying it down!" Jase Bowen started the small-ball parade with a perfect bunt single. Then, call-up Samad Taylor executed a high-wire safety squeeze, bunting to the right side. Antone and the Reds' infield completely booted the coverage, allowing Sheets to slide home for the go-ahead run!
But the Padres weren't finished squeezing the lemon. Fermin stepped right back up and dropped a third consecutive bunt down the line. A frantic Antone fumbled the baseball for a costly fielding error, loading the bases and capping off one of the wildest sequences you will see all season. Six hits came from the bottom three hitters in San Diego's lineup tonight, completely shocking a Cincinnati squad missing their superstar shortstop Elly De La Cruz to injury.
The Friars added three crucial insurance runs in the 8th, highlighted by a roaring two-out, two-run single from Taylor to put the game on ice. Taylor finished the night 2-for-4 with three RBIs, a stolen base, and a web-gem outfield assist that cut down Matt McLain at the plate back in the second. Talk about a sparkplug performance from the new guys!
Reliever Adrian Morejon locked down his fifth win of the year on the mound, handing the Reds their fifth consecutive loss. If tonight proved anything, it's that the engine runs on its sparkplugs, and the Padres' small-ball revolution just ignited Petco Park.
